Guadeloupe
Guadeloupe, the French overseas territory in the Caribbean, captivates with its distinctive butterfly shape. The island is divided into two contrasting halves: the flat, limestone-rich Grande-Terre with its bright, powdery white beaches, and the wild, mountainous Basse-Terre. The latter is home to the imposing La Soufrière volcano and dense rainforests with spectacular waterfalls. Since Guadeloupe belongs to France, visitors enjoy European infrastructure paired with Creole flair—and conveniently, payments are made in Euros. Culinarically, an excellent mix of French haute cuisine and Caribbean spice awaits visitors, while the surrounding islands, such as Les Saintes, invite idyllic day trips.
Our excursion with Bleu Pearl
We had booked this excursion with Bleu Pearl in advance from home. Kerstin is German, and Francette is from Guadeloupe but lived in Germany for a long time, which is where the two of them met. They now live in Guadeloupe and show tourists around their island. Two tours are offered; we chose Tour A, which includes a visit to the filming location of "Death in Paradise," as we are fans of the series. The excursion cost €100 per person and lasted the entire day.
Cascades aux Ecrevisses
The Cascade aux Écrevisses is one of the most visited natural highlights in Guadeloupe. Located in the heart of the National Park on the Basse-Terre side of the island, this waterfall is particularly popular due to its easy accessibility. Situated right off the scenic Route de la Traversée, a well-maintained, accessible path leads through the dense tropical rainforest to the falls in just five minutes. The water cascades about ten meters into an emerald-green basin, which is perfect for a refreshing dip. Although the name "Crayfish Waterfall" is more symbolic today, the site remains a magical photo spot and a perfect example of the lush, wild vegetation of the Antilles.
Parc des Mamelles
Deshaies
The picturesque village of Deshaies on Basse-Terre is world-famous as the primary filming location for the hit series "Death in Paradise." In the show, this charming fishing village transforms into "Honoré" on the fictional island of Saint Marie. Fans can visit the distinctive police station, which is actually the parish hall of the local church, or enjoy a drink at "Catherine’s Bar" right by the sea. Furthermore, the golden Plage de la Perle serves as the backdrop for the Inspector's iconic beachfront shack. The relaxed atmosphere and colorful Caribbean houses make Deshaies an absolute must-see for series enthusiasts and independent travelers alike.
Plage de la Perle
Plage de la Perle, located north of Deshaies, is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Guadeloupe. With its golden sand and views of the island of Montserrat, it offers a postcard-perfect setting that also served as the location for the Inspector's famous beach shack for the creators of "Death in Paradise." The beach is expansive and lined with coconut palms and sea grape trees that provide natural shade. This is where we took our swimming break and enjoyed our pre-ordered snack. The current was very strong that day, so unfortunately, we were unable to go swimming. Instead, we walked along the beach and searched for—and found—the spot where the Inspector's house is set up when filming takes place.
