Cruisportguide Lissabon

Lisbon

Lisbon is one of Europe’s most vibrant and exciting cities. With around 600,000 inhabitants, Portugal’s capital is relatively small, yet it offers more than you could possibly explore in a single day. It is a place where tradition and modernity blend in a truly seamless way. With 290 days of sunshine a year, Lisbon provides its guests with a mild, pleasant climate year-round—the perfect mix for an interesting city break.

The port

In Lisbon, the arrival into the harbor is a major highlight that you shouldn’t miss. From the Atlantic, you sail into the vast estuary of the Tagus. This experience is best enjoyed from an upper deck if you don't happen to have a balcony cabin. On the left side, you will see the Torre de Belém and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos. On the right, the 110-meter-high Christ the King statue appears before the ship slowly glides under the 25 de Abril Bridge.

Most cruise ships in Lisbon dock right in the city center in the historic Alfama district. There are two cruise terminals here with space for a total of four ships. The new Jardim do Tabaco terminal, which opened in 2017, is very centrally located, while the traditional Santa Apolónia Terminal is just a few hundred meters away. A third terminal is the Alcântara Terminal, located 4 km west of the Old Town, near the 25 de Abril Bridge. You can check the port’s website to find out exactly where your ship will be docked.

On foot

Since your ship will likely be docked in such a central location, the city is very easy to explore on foot. However, keep in mind that Lisbon is famously hilly, so you should be prepared for some steep climbs.

If your ship docks at the Alcântara Terminal, it is roughly four kilometers to the Old Town. If that feels like too much of a walk, you can easily take a bus or the tram. There are excellent connections into the city center from the Cais da Rocha stop.

Public transport

Public transport in Lisbon is excellent and very well-developed. In addition to the Metro, there is an extensive network of buses and trams. If you plan to explore Lisbon on your own, we recommend purchasing a day pass, which includes all modes of transport. The day pass is currently priced at €7.

Metro

The Metro is an excellent way for anyone looking to explore Lisbon on their own. Both cruise terminals provide easy access to the Metro network via the Santa Apolónia and Terreiro do Paço stations. You can also purchase your tickets directly at these stations.

Tram

Tram 28E is particularly popular with cruise passengers because it passes many of Lisbon’s most famous sights. To increase your chances of getting a seat, we recommend boarding at one of the terminus stations: Martim Moniz or Campo de Ourique. Since everyone is required to get off at the end of the line, your chances of finding a seat there are very high. A full loop on the tram takes approximately 55 minutes.

For a comfortable trip to Belém, you should take Tram No. 15. You can board this line at the Praça do Comércio station.

Tuk Tuks

For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, Tuk Tuks are waiting just outside the terminals to offer city tours. These vehicles have either four or seven seats, making them ideal for small groups. Tours typically last between one and four hours, with rates ranging from €50 to €75 per hour.

Taxis

There are plenty of taxis available at the terminals, and the fare is calculated using a meter. Since there have been instances of scams in the past, you should always insist that the meter is turned on at the start of your journey.

Hop on Hop off

Natürlich gibt es auch in Lissabon die bekannten Hop on Hop off Busse. Bei Get Your Guide könnt Ihr die Tickets vorab online kaufen. Es gibt auch ein Kombiticket für alle Buslinien und Boote.
