Lissabon 30./31.01.2020

Lisbon

"Lisbon is one of Europe’s most vibrant and exciting cities. With around 600,000 inhabitants, Portugal’s capital is relatively small, yet it offers more than you could possibly explore in a single day. It is a place where tradition and modernity blend in a truly seamless way. With 290 days of sunshine a year, Lisbon provides its guests with a mild, pleasant climate year-round—the perfect mix for an interesting city break.

Bonjardim

Even before leaving home, we had researched Restaurant Bonjardim, which is incredibly popular and always busy thanks to its famous roasted chicken. The restaurant was packed, and we didn't see a single person eating anything other than the chicken—and for good reason, it is truly sensational! The prices are very moderate, with a chicken portion currently costing €7.50.

A Brasiliera

Ginhinja Sem Reaval

This tiny bar is the birthplace of Lisbon’s national drink. Ginjinha (or simply Ginja) is a Portuguese cherry liqueur made from sour cherries. After aging for two months, it achieves its deep color and characteristic flavor.

When ordering, you will often be asked: "Com elas ou sem elas?" (With or without?). This refers to the alcohol-soaked cherries at the bottom of the bottle. Pro Tip: Go for "with," but be careful—the berries have absorbed a lot of alcohol and still contain their pits! Traditionally, the pits are simply spat onto the ground in front of the bar.

As Bifanas do Afonso

The Bifana is arguably Portugal's most popular and authentic sandwich—the ultimate go-to snack found on nearly every street corner in Lisbon. It consists of a simple bread roll filled with thin slices of pork that have been slow-cooked for hours in a marinade of garlic, white wine, bay leaves, and paprika.

Traditionally, there are two ways to garnish a Bifana: either with spicy piri-piri oil or with yellow mustard. It is best enjoyed fresh, hot, and eaten on the go. We chose As Bifanas do Afonso and were certainly not disappointed.

Time Out Market

The Time Out Market opened in 2014 and is open from 10:00 AM to midnight (00:00), and even until 2:00 AM on weekends. More than 30 food stalls are lined up side-by-side around the perimeter of the entire hall. The tables are arranged in long rows in the center of the hall. It is self-service, so you grab your food and drinks yourself and then find a seat—provided you can find an empty one, as it gets very crowded during peak hours. We were lucky; during the off-season, it isn't as busy and we had our choice of seats. We just had a drink before heading off again.

LX Factory

An almost forgotten industrial site has been transformed into one of the coolest spots in Lisbon. After the area lay dormant and derelict for years, life returned in 2012. Startups, advertising agencies, bars, and restaurants moved in; artists arrived, and with them came the vibrant street art. The original factory buildings have been largely preserved, with only the interiors being redesigned. The LX Factory is a truly successful project and should definitely be a part of any Lisbon sightseeing tour.
