Corfu
With a population of 105,000, Corfu is the second largest of the Ionian Islands and the seventh largest in Greece. Just over 32,000 people live in Corfu Town. In the north, Corfu is only 2 km away from Albania. Corfu receives plenty of rain and therefore has lush vegetation. For this reason, it is rightly called 'the Green Island.' Corfu's Old Town invites you to stroll and shop.
The port of Corfu is very centrally located. The Old Town is within walking distance. Simply turn left at the port exit and keep walking along the sea until you reach the old harbor. From there, you can already see the New Fortress, and the Old Town begins. The walk takes about 30 minutes. We had already put together a program beforehand and headed towards the New Fortress on foot. Our destination was the old windmill at Garitsa Bay.
The new fortress
Proudly the New Fortress rises above Corfu Town. It was built by the Venetians and the inhabitants of Corfu between 1576 and 1645. Because of the permanent threat by the Turks, it had become necessary to protect Corfu with a new fortification. For the construction of the fortress, 2,000 houses of the inhabitants of Corfu had to be torn down; this happened not only to gain building material, but also to be able to defend the city better through the gained free space. This led to the fact that Corfu Town today has probably the largest square in Europe, the famous Esplanade.
Old Mill
The old windmill at the end of Garitsa Bay is one of the most famous photo opportunities in Corfu Town. It stands prominently at the end of a long seaside promenade that connects the Old Town with the Kanoni Peninsula. Originally, like many mills on the Ionian Islands, it was used for flour production, but it has since been lovingly restored and is now a popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike.
Particularly in the evening hours, the mill offers a romantic backdrop as the sun sets behind the Old Fortress. Visitors cherish the spot for relaxed seaside strolls or a coffee with a view of the azure water and passing boats. It marks the perfect turning point for a stroll away from the bustling alleys
Restaurant Avli
We came across this restaurant because of the many positive reviews and its proximity to the old windmill, and we were not disappointed. We ordered several appetizers, which were served with homemade bread. The food was excellent, the service was very friendly, and the prices are moderate. It was exactly what we needed after our little hike.
The british cemetery
The British Cemetery is still a bit of a hidden gem and a beautiful place of peace. It is located slightly off the beaten path from the Old Town and has been maintained by George Psailas since his birth in 1927. In April, visitors can admire wild orchids in full bloom, but even during our visit in September, there were many flowering plants. A small bell at the entrance announces visitors to George, who welcomes them warmly. He is always ready for a little chat. Otherwise, there are many beautiful gravesites that tell much about the fates of those buried there. I found it quite moving at times. We spent a good hour in the shaded cemetery, which is still in use today. If you have enough time, you should definitely stop by.
