Dubrovnik
As early as 1979, Dubrovnik was named a UNESCO World Heritage site—and for good reason. Dubrovnik enchants its visitors with beautiful narrow alleys and historic buildings, each telling its own story. You shouldn't miss the chance to view Dubrovnik from the city walls; the view over the city and the sea is fascinating. Dubrovnik is a true treasure on the Adriatic. We took a taxi from the harbor into the city. Waiting for the Aida shuttle bus would have taken too long, and we wanted to get into town early to walk the city walls first thing in the morning before the crowds arrived. That turned out to be a great decision—by noon, the walls and the entire city were absolutely packed. The taxis drop you off right in front of the city gate. We paid €14, and since there were four of us, it was actually cheaper than taking the shuttle
The Citywall
The city wall is by far the most popular attraction in Dubrovnik. Once you pass through the city gate, you will find the entrance to the walls immediately on your left. Payments can be made in euros or by credit card. Dubrovnik's city walls are among the best-preserved fortifications in Europe. Along the 1,940-meter path, visitors will find five fortresses and 16 towers and bastions. The walls are open to visitors year-round and have three entrances: one at the city gate (as mentioned), one next to St. Luke's Church, and the third next to the Maritime Museum
After visiting the city walls, we spent some time exploring the rest of Dubrovnik. By then, the city had become very crowded, and we found ourselves shuffling through the alleys along with thousands of other people. Despite all the tourists, Dubrovnik is beautiful, and if you head into a few side streets, it becomes significantly less crowded. Around lunchtime, we decided to eat in one of those side alleys to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet.
If you’re looking for something more active and want to escape the crowded city, Baja Bikes is the place to go. Here, you can either rent bicycles or book guided city tours with local guides, many of whom are German-speaking.
Tajmahal
Even before we left home, we had chosen Tajmahal, which offers Bosnian cuisine. The restaurant is located in a quiet side street and has tables outside. As it began to fill up, they quickly set up additional tables in front of the restaurant. The service is excellent, the food is delicious, and we would definitely eat at Tajmahal again. We had 'Pola Pola'—Cevapcici with a meat skewer—served with a baked potato. Everything was truly delicious
Since it had become uncomfortably crowded by then, we only walked through the city for a short while longer, always searching for quieter spots. We quickly bought the obligatory magnet and also found a beautiful picture that still reminds us of Dubrovnik today. Then, we took a taxi back to the harbor. It would certainly be a good idea if Dubrovnik restricted the number of ships. These crowds of people really aren't good for the city, as they simply cannot spread out properly.
