Cannes
Cannes, with its 74,000 inhabitants, is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Côte d'Azur. Cannes is famous for the annual Film Festival that has been held here since 1946.
A highlight is a stroll along the beautifully designed promenade. In the Old Town, the Notre-Dame de l'Espérance church and the historic district with its winding, narrow alleys attract tourists. From here, you have a wonderful view of the yacht harbor and Cannes.
Many cruise ship passengers also start their shore excursions from Cannes to visit the neighboring cities of Nice and Monaco.
Cannes greeted us with rain. So, we postponed our exploration of the city until the afternoon. The decision to have lunch on the Mein Schiff proved to be absolutely right in hindsight; a fierce thunderstorm passed over us, which even briefly made tendering impossible.
After eating in the empty Atlantic Restaurant, we also took the tender boat over to the harbor of Cannes. The weather became significantly better—the sun even came out, which immediately makes a city much more beautiful.
Eglise Notre Dame d`Espérance
We made our way through the colorful streets of the Old Town to the Eglise Notre Dame d'Espérance, which is situated on a small hill. The ascent is easily manageable, and from there, we had a great view of Cannes and the yacht harbor. Many shady spots around the small church invite you to linger.
Construction of the church began in 1521 but was only completed in 1627. It is enthroned on a hill above Cannes, and from here, you have a great view of the city and the yacht harbor.
Marché Forville
The market hall in Cannes is worth seeing. The Marché Forville offers everything the heart desires. Fruits, vegetables, flowers, and of course, fish are all on offer.
Surrounding the market hall are many small restaurants and shops that complete the atmosphere. Unfortunately, due to the weather, we arrived too late; the market was already closed.
Palais des Festivals et des Congrès
Now it was time to see the most famous building in Cannes. Even without the red carpet, the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès is impressive. Not only does the Film Festival take place here, but also events and congresses year-round. Unfortunately, due to an event, we couldn't go onto the grounds, so we walked on.
We walked parallel to the promenade, but unfortunately, it was not directly accessible at the moment due to construction work. We walked along a construction fence, which, however, became an interesting work of art with countless posters of prominent Cannes visitors.
Finally, we were able to walk along a tiny section of the promenade. We settled down at a café and soaked up the atmosphere of Cannes with a cold beer.
