Martinique, often referred to as the "Island of Flowers," is a fascinating French overseas territory in the Lesser Antilles. The island captivates with its diverse landscapes: the north is characterized by lush rainforests and the majestic Mont Pelée volcano, while the south attracts visitors with stunning, light-colored sandy beaches like Grande Anse des Salines. As part of the EU, Martinique offers excellent infrastructure and uses the Euro as its currency. Culturally, French elegance and Creole vibrancy blend here, which is particularly reflected in the excellent cuisine and the famous Rhum Agricole. The capital, Fort-de-France, also impresses with historical sights such as the Schoelcher Library.
The port of Fort-de-France in Martinique is a major hub for cruise ships in the Caribbean. Large liners typically dock directly at the Pointe Simon Business Center, which is just a few minutes' walk from the city center. This provides tourists with easy access to landmarks such as the Schoelcher Library and Fort Saint-Louis.
The harbor area is modern and offers excellent infrastructure, including tourist information desks, taxis, and car rental stations. This is also the departure point for the popular ferries (Vedettes Tropicales), which quickly transport visitors to the beaches of Trois-Îlets. The blend of bustling port activity and French flair makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the island.

Due to its central docking location, no shuttle buses are used in Fort-de-France.
Public transport in Martinique is diverse but requires a bit of planning. The centerpiece is the Mozaïk bus network, which primarily serves the Greater Fort-de-France area. The TCSP system is particularly efficient; these modern "tram-buses" run in dedicated lanes, allowing them to bypass the capital's heavy rush-hour traffic.
For trips to more rural regions, locals often use Taxicos. These shared taxis do not have fixed schedules but instead depart as soon as they are full. A unique feature is the Vedettes Tropicales—passenger ferries that connect the port of Fort-de-France quickly and stress-free with the beaches of Trois-Îlets. Overall, the system offers an authentic and affordable way to experience the island and its French flair firsthand.
Since the buses no longer run regularly toward the evening, I would rather advise you to get a rental car.
Taxis are available for cruise passengers at both terminals. There are also boards on display showing fixed rates to the island's most popular destinations. Prices generally range between €50 and €70 per vehicle per hour.
For those looking to visit the beaches of Trois-Îlets (Pointe du Bout, Anse Mitan), taking the ferry from the port of Fort-de-France is often a faster and more affordable option.
There are no car rental offices located directly at the port. However, some rental companies offer a shuttle service. Booking your rental car in advance is highly recommended.
There are no scooter rental providers located within the port of Martinique
