Curaçao
Curaçao is a colorful Caribbean jewel and one of the ABC Islands. Famous for the bright, pastel-colored houses in its capital, Willemstad—a UNESCO World Heritage site—the island offers a unique blend of European history and Caribbean flair.
Beyond the impressive architecture, Curaçao entices visitors with over 35 stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters that are ideal for snorkeling and diving. The cultural diversity is particularly fascinating: residents typically speak Papiamentu, Dutch, English, and Spanish. Whether you are strolling through the alleys of Punda or exploring the rugged nature of Christoffel National Park, Curaçao enchants every visitor with its warm hospitality.
Kaya Kaya
Otrobanda is the pulsing heart of Willemstad in Curaçao, renowned for its winding alleys and colorful architecture. Once a historic residential district, it has been transformed into a vibrant art hub through initiatives like the Kaya Kaya festival. Kaya Kaya is more than just a street party; it is a community project that brings together local artists and residents to beautify the neighborhood through impressive murals and renovations. During the festival, the streets fill with music, dancing, and the aroma of local specialties. It celebrates the resilience and creativity of the community, making Otrobanda an essential experience for every visitor.
Tula Wak
Tula was the leader of the great slave revolt of 1795 on Curaçao and is now revered as a national hero of the island. Inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution, he demanded freedom for all enslaved people. The uprising began at the Kenepa plantation and quickly spread across the island. Although the movement was suppressed after weeks and Tula, along with his comrades, was brutally executed, his courage marked the beginning of the end of slavery in the Netherlands Antilles. Today, Tula Park and the monument in Rif commemorate his tireless struggle for human rights and justice.
Curaçao liqueur distillery
The Curacao Liqueur Distillery, housed in the historic 19th-century Landhuis Chobolobo, is the birthplace of the "Genuine Curaçao Liqueur." Since 1896, the family business Senior & Co. has been producing the world-famous liqueur according to a secret original recipe. Its unique character comes from the Laraha fruit, a bitter orange that grows exclusively on the island. Its dried peels provide the essential oils for the distinctive aroma. At the distillery, visitors can marvel at the production process in antique copper stills, taste various flavors like the iconic Blue Curaçao, and learn more about the fascinating history of the island's "golden" export treasure.
Flamingos
On Curaçao, the pink flamingos are one of the island's most fascinating natural spectacles. These elegant birds can be observed in their natural habitat, particularly in the salt pans of Jan Kok (Sint Willibrordus) and near Sint Michiel. The flamingos on Curaçao belong to the Caribbean flamingo species and owe their vibrant color to a specific diet of small crustaceans and algae found in the shallow waters. Since they are very shy, it is important to keep a respectful distance so as not to disturb the animals while they forage. A visit at sunset often provides magical photo opportunities against the backdrop of historic plantation houses.
Playa Piskada
Playa Piskada, also known as Playa Grandi, is a small, picturesque fisherman's beach in the north of Curaçao near Westpunt. It has become famous primarily as the best spot on the island to observe sea turtles in their natural habitat. Since local fishermen clean their catch right on the pier, the turtles are attracted by the scraps and often swim in close proximity to visitors. While the beach itself is more functional than idyllic, the clear water offers an unforgettable snorkeling experience. However, it is vital to treat the animals with respect, avoid touching them, and give the fishermen plenty of space to work.
Playa Forti Restaurant
Playa Forti Restaurant offers far more than just a meal; it is an experience for all the senses. Perched high on the cliffs of Westpunt, guests enjoy an unparalleled view of the turquoise sea while sampling local delicacies like "Keshi Yena" or the famous goat stew. The atmosphere is relaxed and perfectly captures the authentic spirit of Curaçao. Brave visitors take the opportunity to watch the cliff divers who plunge into the depths right next to the terrace. Whether for a leisurely lunch after snorkeling or a romantic cocktail at sunset, this location, steeped in history, remains unforgettable.
Swim Stop at Grote Knip
Grote Knip, also known as Playa Kenepa Grandi, is considered the most photographed and popular beach on Curaçao. Located between high cliffs in the western part of the island, this beach captivates visitors with its incredibly vibrant azure water and fine white sand. It is a public beach that is especially popular among locals for weekend picnics. Visitors can enjoy the iconic panoramic view from the observation deck atop the cliffs or dive directly into the crystal-clear water for snorkeling. Despite its popularity, Grote Knip has preserved its natural beauty, offering an authentic piece of Caribbean paradise away from large hotel resorts.
