Barbados

Barbados impresses with a fascinating blend of British heritage and Caribbean joie de vivre. While the West Coast—often called the "Platinum Coast"—allures visitors with its calm, turquoise waters and luxurious resorts, the East Coast reveals its wild side at Bathsheba Beach, defined by rugged surf and dramatic rock formations.

Shore excursion Best of Barbados

We booked our excursion through Stephanie Skinner, who also accompanied us on the tour. You can reach Stephanie at [email protected]Tour operators are not permitted to enter the port premises. Therefore, they wait for their guests at the roundabout directly after the port exit. You will also find taxi drivers there offering tours at lower prices than those at the cruise terminal. However, please note that these drivers are not government-approved.

Batts Rock Beach

Batts Rock Beach on the west coast of Barbados is a true hidden gem for travelers seeking natural beauty away from large resort complexes. The beach impresses with crystal-clear, calm waters that are ideal for snorkeling and swimming. Framed by wooded hills, it offers plenty of natural shade and the chance to spot the famous green monkeys in the trees. With the chic beach restaurant "La Cabane" right in the sand, the location blends rustic wilderness with an exclusive lifestyle. Thanks to public facilities like showers and a parking lot, it is also perfect for a relaxed day trip on the Platinum Coast.

Speightstown

Our second stop was Speightstown, the second-largest town in Barbados. Captivates visitors with its authentic, historical charm. Unlike the bustling Holetown, this spot on the northwest coast maintains a serene and laid-back atmosphere. The architecture is defined by colonial buildings with wooden balconies, which now house cozy cafés and art galleries. A stroll along the esplanade offers stunning views of the turquoise sea, while the local fish market showcases genuine island life. A must-visit is the "Arlington House Museum," which dives deep into the town's trading history. Speightstown is the perfect destination for travelers wishing to experience the real Barbados away from the main tourist crowds.

Morgan Lewis Windmill

The Morgan Lewis Windmill in the parish of St. Andrew is an impressive monument to the colonial history of Barbados. As the largest and only remaining, fully intact sugar windmill in the Caribbean, it stands as a testament to the era when wind power dominated sugarcane processing. Built in 1727, it remained operational until 1947. Today, it is managed by the Barbados National Trust as a museum, housing historical artifacts and photographs. Visitors can climb inside to marvel at the complex machinery. From its vantage point, one can also enjoy spectacular panoramic views over the rugged Scotland District and the island's east coast.

Bathsheba Beach

Bathsheba Beach on the rugged east coast of Barbados is not your typical swimming beach; it is a dramatic spectacle of nature. Instead of gentle waves, the landscape is dominated by massive rock formations and the thundering Atlantic Ocean.

The spot is world-renowned for the "Soup Bowl," a mecca for surfers drawn to its powerful swells. For those seeking tranquility, the view of the mushroom-shaped coral boulders rising like monuments from the water is breathtaking, as is relaxing in the shallow rock pools at low tide.

The atmosphere is wild, untamed, and refreshingly far from mass tourism—a place that leaves a lasting impression through its raw beauty and salty sea air.

Bottom Bay

Bottom Bay is often considered the most beautiful beach in Barbados and looks like it came straight off a postcard. Located deep in the southeast of the island, it is framed by high coral cliffs that give it an almost intimate, hidden atmosphere.

The contrast between the powdery white sand, the vibrant green coconut palms, and the deep blue water is breathtaking. Since the surf here is often very strong, the bay is less suitable for swimming and more ideal for a picnic or simply switching off. Those who venture down the short descent via the steps will find an untouched paradise that perfectly embodies the wild side of the Caribbean.
