Cruiseportguide La Romana

La Romana

La Romana is a gem on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic and a highlight of any Caribbean cruise. Known for its blend of luxury and culture, the region offers something for everyone. A definite must-see is Altos de Chavón, a faithful recreation of a 16th-century Mediterranean artists' village perched high above the Chavón River.

Nature lovers are usually drawn to nearby Saona Island. Its uninhabited dream beaches and crystal-clear, shallow waters are the epitome of paradise. For those seeking sports and activity, the exclusive Casa de Campo resort features some of the best golf courses in the world

Arrival an Departure

Cruisers could hardly ask for a more convenient embarkation than in La Romana. When departing from your home airport, you check in your luggage and won't see it again until it arrives right outside your cabin. Upon arrival in La Romana, you head directly from the plane to the waiting shuttle buses, reaching the port in just 15 to 20 minutes. The check-in process is well-organized and quickly completed, allowing your vacation on board to begin immediately.

The departure is equally relaxed: you check in for your flight directly at the cruise terminal. Your suitcases are transported straight to the airport and loaded onto the aircraft for you.

The port

The cruise port of La Romana, officially known as Muelle Turístico Casa de Campo, is far more than just a docking point; it is one of the most important tourism hubs in the Dominican Republic. Located on the southeast coast, right at the mouth of the picturesque Río Chavón, the port impresses with its world-class infrastructure and its immediate proximity to world-famous resorts.

What truly sets this port apart is its role as a homeport. Many European cruise lines use La Romana for passenger turnaround because the logistics here are exceptionally smooth. The terminal itself is modern and offers travelers everything they need for a relaxed start to their vacation: from duty-free shops and small cafés to information desks for shore excursions.

on foot

La Romana, with its population of approximately 190,000, is located about 2.5 km from the port and is therefore easily reachable on foot. The city center is situated on the other side of the river and can be accessed via the only bridge. However, La Romana itself does not have much to offer for shore excursionists, so it definitely makes sense to explore the surrounding areas instead.

Shuttle buses

As the city is easily reachable on foot and the majority of passengers book excursions, shuttle services in La Romana are not available.

Public transport

Guaguas (minibuses) connect La Romana with the surrounding small towns. The long-distance buses Expreso Romana and Expreso Bavaro provide services to Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

Taxis

Most cruisers want to go on excursions to the surrounding area or visit beautiful beaches. For this purpose, taxis are available at the port to take you to your desired destination.

Fixed prices are posted on boards, and payment is made in dollars. Both one-way trips and round trips are available; for round trips, the waiting times on-site are already included in the price

Rental Cars

Avis has a station located directly at the international port of Casa de Campo. Alamo and other car rental companies have offices in the city. You can check availability and pick-up locations on Swoodoo.

Hop on Hop off

There are no city tours with the well-known red double-decker buses in La Romana

Trackless train

A little shuttle train starts right at the pier for a sightseeing loop of La Romana. The ride lasts approximately one hour and features two 'hop-on, hop-off' stops. You can buy tickets at the terminal or sometimes even on board your ship.

Bikes

Bicycle rentals are not available at the La Romana cruise terminal. If you're looking to explore on two wheels, you can book an E-bike tour in nearby Bayahibe through Viator.
