Lanzarote
Lanzarote is the fourth-largest of the Canary Islands. It is 58 km long and 34 km wide. The island has approximately 150,000 inhabitants, nearly 60,000 of whom live in the capital, Arrecife. Lanzarote is located just under 12 km north of Fuerteventura.
It is one of the most beautiful islands in the Canaries, largely thanks to César Manrique, whose influence can be seen everywhere. The artist is the island's most famous resident. During his lifetime, he held significant influence and was able to convince the government to focus on high-quality tourism.
Timanfaya National Park
In Lanzarote, we had booked a panoramic tour, and our first destination was the Timanfaya National Park. It is one of the most important sights on the island. After about 30 minutes, we reached the park and first watched the demonstrations. Right there, the ground is so hot that a bucket of water poured into a hole in the earth creates a geyser. Even volcanic rock just a few centimeters deep is already so hot that you can hardly hold it in your hands. Anyone who actually manages to do so is allowed to take it home. Wood thrown into a hole in the ground ignites immediately. As you can see, there is still activity beneath the surface. After the demonstrations, we took the bus into the Fire Mountains with their volcanic craters and lava fields. During this ride, you learn a lot about the island's volcanoes.
El Golfo
Just under 15 minutes from the National Park lies the small fishing village of El Golfo, with its white and blue painted houses.
We made a short stop here to see the El Golfo lagoon. It is fed by the sea through underground channels and stands out with its vibrant green color against the black lava sand. From the adjacent cliff, you can take beautiful photos of the ocean and the village. If you come here with a rental car, be sure to take some time to stroll through the little town. Last year, we had a salad at Casa Torano. The food was very good, and the seaside terrace is the most beautiful one in El Golfo.
Los Hervideros
Located between the fishing village of El Golfo and the Salinas de Janubio is the bizarre rocky coastline of Los Hervideros. It was formed during the last volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736. The strong surf on Lanzarote's west coast causes the incoming waves to force themselves through the narrow rock crevices, shooting into the air as fountains several meters high. During our visit, however, the sea was very calm, so we didn't get to see this natural spectacle. A visit is especially worthwhile when there is a strong westerly wind.
Bodega Antonio Suarez
There are more than 10 bodegas on Lanzarote where you can enjoy wine tastings. They are located along the La Geria wine route. All the way up to the high slopes of the volcanic cones, the black lava soil is covered with vine hollows. We made a short stop at Bodega Antonio Suarez to sample some wine. Like most others, this bodega is located directly on the La Geria wine road. It features a lovely little garden where you can make yourself comfortable with a glass of wine.
The top sights
Lanzarote is a very popular travel destination. Not only do cruise ships dock here regularly, but there are also many tourists who love the mild climate of the Canary Islands. As a result, long queues can form at the top attractions, and some sites now exclusively offer tickets with fixed time slots. For these sights, it is highly worth booking a fast-track ticket or a guaranteed time slot in advance:
