Fuerteventura

Long sandy beaches, rugged nature, and picturesque villages – you will find all of this on Fuerteventura. Just over 122,000 people live on the island, with nearly 40,000 of them residing in the capital, Puerto del Rosario. Fuerteventura has a very unique character. Of all the Canary Islands, it is the most barren and bizarre. Not every visitor will discover the charm of this island, but those who fall for it once keep coming back. Fuerteventura doesn’t have nearly as many sights as its neighboring island, Lanzarote; people come here primarily for water sports and beach holidays. The south of the island is a surfer's paradise, and surfers also get their money's worth in the north at Punta Blanca

Los Menceyes

In ancient times, Fuerteventura consisted of two kingdoms. King Guise ruled in Jandía, while King Ayose ruled in the north. In 1405, Jean de Béthencourt conquered the island, and the kings surrendered. They were allowed to keep their land, but they lost their entire population due to introduced diseases. To ensure their history is not forgotten, two 4.50-meter-high statues were erected in 2008 at the mountain pass leading to the old capital, Betancuria.

Betancuria

Betancuria is considered the most historic place on Fuerteventura. The former island capital was founded in 1404 by the Norman Jean de Béthencourt in a hidden valley to provide protection from pirate attacks. Today, the village is one of the most beautiful spots on the island and is a protected heritage site.

A highlight is the church of Santa Maria, which was magnificently rebuilt in the 17th century after its destruction. While strolling through the cobblestone streets, you can experience the authentic, traditional flair. Nearby, the Mirador de Guise y Ayose viewpoints offer a spectacular view over the central massif. A visit to Betancuria is a must for anyone interested in culture.

Santa Maria

The church of Santa Maria was built in 1410 and served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Fuerteventura from 1424 to 1432. Although it was built far from the sea in the mountains, it was repeatedly the target of pirate attacks. In the 16th century, it was heavily destroyed and then rebuilt in the 17th century in its current appearance.

Museo del Queso Majojero

The Museo del Queso Majorero is much more than just a cheese museum. Housed in a large finca, three buildings cover different topics. The first building focuses on the flora and fauna of Fuerteventura. In the second building, you will find everything about Queso Majorero, Fuerteventura’s world-renowned goat cheese. The third building is dedicated to the Cabra, the island's goat.

After leaving the building, you should definitely go up to the roof terrace to enjoy the view. If you like, you can also visit the windmill, whose machinery is still fully preserved.

The museum is open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM. Adults pay €5, while children up to 12 years old pay €2.50.

Aloe Vera Farm

To conclude our excursion, we visited an Aloe Vera farm, where we were guests at Aloe Vera Exclusive. Dino told us a lot about the extraction of Aloe, and we had the opportunity to test individual products. Afterward, we headed back to the harbor.
