Mallorca
Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, is far more than just a destination for party tourists. While the notorious "Ballermann" at Playa de Palma often makes headlines, the hinterland reveals a completely different world. The majestic Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site, impresses with its rugged limestone peaks and picturesque mountain villages like Valldemossa.
In spring, the almond blossom transforms the island into a sea of white and pink, while summer draws bathers to hidden, turquoise coves. The capital, Palma, impresses with its Gothic cathedral, La Seu, and a vibrant culinary scene. Whether cycling, hiking, or relaxed finca living – Mallorca combines Mediterranean tradition with modern quality of life.
The port
The cruise port of Mallorca has been expanded in recent years. On peak days, up to seven cruise ships are docked here simultaneously. On the official port website, you can check where your ship will be berthed, and you can download a map of the port there as well.
There are two main piers for cruise ships:
-
Muelle de Poniente: This pier has been extended several times to accommodate multiple ships. Guests reach the terminals (Estación Marítima 1-4) via covered walkways. There is a taxi rank directly in front of the terminals and a bus stop on the main road.
-
Dique del Oeste: Located on the opposite side of the harbor near the San Carlos Fortress. The Estación Marítima 6 terminal was opened here in 2018 and is fully equipped to handle large vessels. A taxi rank is available on-site; however, the nearest bus stop is located at the port exit, which is about a 15-minute walk away.
indipendent arrival
Many cruise lines offer arrival and departure packages, but these are usually quite expensive. Mallorca, in particular, is very easy to reach on your own. There are several daily flights to Mallorca from almost all major German airports. Once you arrive at the airport, there are several ways to get to the port.
by taxi
Mallorca Airport is not far from the capital. The drive takes about 20 minutes and costs approximately €25 - 35.
by bus
The bus stops are located directly in front of the terminal, where you can find line A1 at stop 547 to take you from the airport to Palma. Although this line previously ran all the way to the harbor, you now have to change at the Passeig Mallorca stop to line 1 heading towards Porto Pi. The fare is €5 per person, making it a very affordable way to reach your ship. If your ship is docked at Muelle de Poniente, your stop is Estació Marítima, from where you simply cross the street and follow a short path to the terminal. If your ship is at Dique del Oeste, stay on the bus until the final stop, Escola Nàutica, and from there it is approximately a 10-minute walk through the port to the terminal.
on foot
The old town of Palma is located relatively far from the port, with a distance of about 4 km from Muelle de Poniente and even 6 km from Dique del Oeste to the island's capital. If you still wish to set off on foot, you should plan for a walk of one to one and a half hours. The route into the city is quite beautiful, as it leads around the bay and offers a wonderful view of the sea.
Shuttle buses
Most cruise lines offer a shuttle bus service for a fee. This shuttle stops near the cathedral and costs between six and ten euros.
Public transport
Mallorca has a well-developed bus network. You can take Line 1 from both terminals to Palma. For the Muelle de Poniente, the bus stop is located directly in front of the terminal. From the Dique del Oeste, you have to walk to the port exit, where the stop is located just to the left of the exit. You can find schedules and prices on the bus company's website. Currently, a one-way fare costs two euros. For convenience, you can now pay for your ticket on the bus using contactless payment with a credit card or smartphone.
Hop on hop off
You can also see the typical red Hop-on Hop-off buses in Mallorca. If your ship is docked at Muelle de Poniente, bus stop 14 is located directly in front of the terminal on the main road. If your ship is at Dique del Oeste, it is best to take the shuttle bus into the city and board there. Prices and tickets can be found here.
Taxis
Taxis are available at both terminals. For a trip into the city, you should budget approximately €15. The company taximallorca also offers tours; you can find prices and tour details on the company's website.
Car rental
Unfortunately, car rental companies in Mallorca do not have offices directly at the cruise terminals. These are primarily located in Palma instead.
- Sixt has its office at Calle Marbella 53b, and Europcar is located on Avenida Gabriel Roca.
Bikes
For those who enjoy staying active, Baja Bikes is a great choice. Here, you can either rent bicycles or book guided city tours with locals.
