Nuuk
Nuuk is the capital of Greenland and, with around 20,000 inhabitants, is the country's largest and fastest-growing city—and simultaneously one of the smallest capitals in the world. Over a third of Greenland's total population lives here.
Nuuk is located on a peninsula at the mouth of an extensive fjord system and is the cultural and political center of Greenland; the Greenlandic Self-Government, the university, and the National Museum are all based here. Despite its small size, Nuuk offers a blend of modern infrastructure, colorful colonial buildings, and overwhelming Arctic wilderness. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the sea often remains ice-free, which enables fishing and year-round boat excursions.
The Port
The harbor of Nuuk is centrally located in the capital and is the most important gateway to the Arctic region. Since Nuuk often remains ice-free thanks to the Gulf Stream, the harbor can frequently be used year-round.
Nuuk was the only port in Greenland where we docked directly at the pier. The harbor is very centrally located; both the city and the pier for the local excursion boats are easily reachable on foot.
on foot
The center of Nuuk is approximately 2 km from the harbor and can be reached in about 30 minutes. Nuuk is quite hilly, and the path from the harbor toward the city has a steep uphill section for a short distance. You should keep that in mind.
Shuttlebuses
In Nuuk, no free bus service from the harbor to the city is provided. During our trip, no paid shuttle bus was used either. The walk into the city is easily manageable and interesting, as you quickly enter the urban area.
Taxis
During our visit to Nuuk, taxis were waiting at the ship. There are several taxi companies in Nuuk; the two leading ones are Nuuk Taxi and Taxagut. You can ask the drivers for the prices.
