Cruiseport Guide Illimanaq

Ilimanaq, formerly known by its Danish name Claushavn, is a picturesque and historic settlement on Disko Bay in West Greenland, located about 15 kilometers south of Ilulissat. The modern Greenlandic name, appropriately, translates to the "Place of Expectations." With a population of only around 50 residents, Ilimanaq is one of the smaller, yet culturally significant, places in the region.

The settlement lies directly at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a stunning backdrop where gigantic icebergs drift by. The brightly coloured wooden houses and well-restored buildings from the colonial era, including the 1751 administrator's house and the 1908 church, attest to the long history of the site, which was founded in 1741.

Today, the community thrives on fishing, hunting, and sustainable tourism. The Ilimanaq Lodge, with its luxury cabins perched on the cliffs and a gourmet restaurant in the historic structures, has established Ilimanaq as a destination for eco-tourism. A visit offers a unique insight into the traditional life of a Greenlandic settlement, far removed from the everyday hustle.

The port

In Ilimanaq, ships anchor in the bay and passengers are brought ashore by tender boats. It is important to note that the pier does not meet the usual standards you might be accustomed to. Those with severe physical limitations will likely experience difficulties when boarding and disembarking here.

The left picture shows the pier where the tender boats dock, while the right picture shows the path leading to the local fishing boats that offer excursions into the fjord. Sturdy footwear is absolutely mandatory for navigating the terrain.

On foot

Illimanaq, with its 55 inhabitants, is very manageable. The small village can be quickly explored on foot. Please note that you should wear sturdy footwear, as the paths are unpaved and sometimes not in the best condition."

Illimanaq Lodge

The Ilulissat Icefjord Lodge, built directly on the fjord, attracts visitors seeking tranquility and the unique nature around Ilulissat. Its bungalows offer views of Disko Bay. The bungalows are luxuriously furnished, and the restaurant and reception are housed in the village's two oldest buildings. The lodge's restaurant is one of Greenland's leading dining establishments. It maintains a high standard, focusing on locally sourced ingredients.

However, the tranquility and the view come at a price; we briefly considered spending a night there, but a single night costs over €300.

Excursion tips

Generally, the highlight of a visit to Illimanaq is a boat trip into Disko Bay, where icebergs from the Ilulissat Icefjord drift. These icebergs originate from Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the world's most active and fastest glaciers. The glacier constantly calves at the mouth of the Icefjord. The icebergs first accumulate in the shallow part of the fjord before drifting further into Disko Bay and from there, into the Atlantic.

Trips into Disko Bay are offered by shipping companies, local professional providers, and also by local fishermen.
