Nanortalik port informations

Nanortalik

Nanortalik, with its population of just under 1,100 residents, was our first stop in Greenland. Nanortalik is a charming coastal town with a rugged beauty. Its name means 'Sun Town' or 'Place with Many Polar Ptarmigans' in the local language. The surroundings offer fjords, icebergs, and craggy rocks silhouetted against the sea. The residents appreciate the laconic rhythm of life, which is supported by traditions of hunting, fishing, and crafts. Nanortalik has a close-knit community where the school, church, and youth culture play central roles.

The port

The port is located directly by the town. As with most Greenlandic harbors, tendering is used in Nanortalik. For such a small/modest town, Nanortalik has a modern pier—a situation that would clearly worsen/deteriorate later in the trip.

On foot

With its 1,100 residents, Nanortalik is very manageable (or easy to navigate). The harbor is right in the middle of town, and all the sights are within easy walking distance. Since not all the roads in the village are well-paved/well-maintained, good footwear is very important.

Shuttlebuses

Because Nanortalik is so small and easy to get around, there are no shuttle buses.

Public transportation

Nanortalik has no public buses. You can reach everything on foot.

Taxis

Taxis are not needed in Nanortalik. We did, however, see a car with a taxi sign on the roof, likely used to transport residents to other settlements.
